1. Correctly administer the ABN to the appropriate Medicare Beneficiaries.
2. Identify the mandatory vs. voluntary applications of the ABN.
3. Identify and utilize the correct modifiers that are related to the ABN.

Description: Determining when audiology care is or is not covered under the Medicare program and when the Advanced Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN) is required has been a source of confusion and frustration for many audiologists. In this eAudiology Web seminar the ABN as it relates to the profession of audiology will be discussed.

Annette A. Burton, AuD, is the director of the Easter Seals Center for Better Hearing in Connecticut. Dr. Burton is currently the chair of the Coding and Reimbursement Committee for the American Academy of Audiology and the Connecticut Academy of Audiology. She also serves on the Practice Policy Advisory Committee and the Government Relations Committee for the Academy. She is a founding board member of the Connecticut Academy of Audiology.

Dr. Burton has authored and co-authored numerous articles, educational guides and has presented regularly on various topics related to coding and reimbursement including the Medicare program. She is the recipient of the American Academy of Audiology 2010 Active Advocate of the Year Award and the 2012 American Academy of Audiology Presidential Award for her contributions to the profession.
