Description:

The healthcare landscape is changing rapidly due to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, forcing healthcare professionals, hospitals, and insurers to rethink what they offer patients and how those services are delivered. Additional forces, such as competition, niche marketing, and political power will be just as important in the future as they are now. There are trends in healthcare, e.g., cost containment initiatives, shortages of providers, and federal and state regulations that help or hurt audiologists, resulting in unintended consequences that dramatically affect the practice of audiology, presently and in the future.

Jeffrey Browne, JD is CEO of CapAd Communications, a direct contact firm, and he is the public member of the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE). His firm works with political candidates and parties at the state and federal level. An attorney by training, he also represents several healthcare associations that are focused on many of the same federal issues facing audiologists, including scope of practice and direct access. Mr. Browne is president of Nyumbani-USA, a non-profit that helps Kenyan children who are infected or affected by the HIV+ virus. He is married to Tomi, an audiologist and founding member of the Academy, and together they have three children.

Jodi Mitchell has over 15 years in health care policy and advocacy experience on both the state and federal level. Mitchell currently serves as the Health Policy Program Officer for the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation in Cleveland, OH. Mitchell's experience focuses on health reform implementation and policy areas affecting public health, providers and consumer/patient education efforts. She also has been successful in building coalitions united to achieve common goals and grassroots mobilization. Mitchell is no stranger to audiology having served as the Director of Health Care Policy for the Academy in 2002-2006. She also utilized her expertise in Medicare policy to position the profession of optometry for quality reporting and the implementation of electronic health records, and was active in legislative strategy and advocacy on behalf of the American Optometric Association. Mitchell is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science.

Debra Abel, AuD received her Bachelor and Masters degrees from Kent State University and her AuD from the Arizona School of Health Sciences.  Dr. Abel spent 13 years in private practice in Alliance, OH after moving an existing practice from the Alliance Eye and Ear Clinic, where she was employed for 14 years, taking the ENT with her. Prior to being the Academy's Senior Education Specialist, Business Practices, she was the Director of Reimbursement and Practice Compliance and served as an Academy Board member-at-large and as the chair of the Academy's Coding and Reimbursement Committee. Associated with Arch Health Partners in Poway, CA, she provides audiologic services on a limited schedule. Dr. Abel is an adjunct instructor at A.T. Still and Salus Univesities.
